An HVAC Installation Apprenticeship Program
In Memory of Ashtin Caruso
Apprenticeship Program Duration: 3 Months
Program Overview
The Ashtin Caruso Apprentice Program was established to honor the memory of Ashtin Caruso, a passionate HVAC graduate whose career was just beginning when his life was unexpectedly cut short before his first day on the job with Link Services.
Although Ashtin never had the opportunity to begin the journey he worked so hard to prepare for, his enthusiasm for the HVAC trade, commitment to learning, and excitement for the future will continue to inspire every apprentice who joins this program.
This apprenticeship program was created to honor his passion and potential by helping aspiring technicians gain the skills, confidence, and real-world experience needed to build successful careers as HVAC installers.
Over the course of this intensive three-month program, apprentices will work alongside experienced HVAC installation professionals across a variety of residential and light-commercial environments. Participants will receive hands-on training, practical field experience, and mentorship designed to build a strong foundation in HVAC installation best practices, safety, craftsmanship, teamwork, and customer service.
By the end of the program, participants will have developed the fundamental skills necessary to take the next step in their HVAC careers with confidence.
What Apprentices Will Learn
A key component of the Ashtin Caruso Apprentice Program is mentorship. Apprentices will work alongside experienced HVAC professionals who are committed to sharing their knowledge, providing guidance, and helping participants grow both personally and professionally.
By learning from seasoned installers in real-world situations, apprentices are exposed to insights and experience that can’t be taught in a classroom alone. This mentorship-driven approach helps accelerate skill development, build confidence, and prepare participants for long-term success in the trade.
Throughout the program, apprentices will gain exposure to a variety of HVAC installation concepts and field practices, including:
- Job-site safety and proper tool usage: Apprentices will learn the importance of maintaining a safe work environment by following established safety procedures, identifying potential hazards, and using HVAC tools and equipment correctly. Apprentices will gain familiarity with common installation tools while understanding the role proper usage and maintenance play in quality workmanship and job-site safety.
- HVAC equipment identification and operation: Apprentices will develop an understanding of common HVAC components and equipment, including their purposes, functions, and roles within the overall system. Apprentices will learn how different types of equipment work together to provide comfort, efficiency, and reliable performance.
- Installation preparation and job-site setup: Apprentices will learn how successful installations begin with proper planning and preparation. Apprentices will observe and participate in organizing materials, staging equipment, protecting customer property, and preparing the job site to support an efficient installation process.
- Ductwork installation and modification: Apprentices will gain exposure to ductwork systems and learn how proper installation, sealing, and modifications contribute to system performance, airflow, and overall comfort. Apprentices will become familiar with the materials, techniques, and attention to detail required for quality ductwork installation.
- System replacement and new construction installations: Apprentices will explore the differences between replacing existing HVAC systems and installing equipment in new construction environments. Apprentices will observe the unique planning, coordination, and installation requirements for each project type.
- Equipment startup procedures and quality checks: Apprentices will learn the importance of startup processes and post-installation inspections in ensuring equipment operates as intended. Apprentices will gain an understanding of system checks, performance verification, and the attention to detail required before a project is considered complete.
- Material handling and inventory management: Apprentices will understand the proper handling, transportation, storage, and organization of HVAC materials and equipment. Apprentices will learn how effective inventory management reduces waste, prevents delays, and keeps installation projects running smoothly.
- Customer communication and job-site etiquette: Apprentices will observe how professional installers interact with customers while representing the company on every job site. Apprentices will learn the importance of clear communication, professionalism, respect for customers’ property, and maintaining a positive customer experience throughout the installation process.
- Team collaboration and professional workplace expectations: Apprentices will work alongside experienced team members to understand how communication, accountability, reliability, and cooperation contribute to successful projects. Apprentices will also learn the workplace expectations that support long-term career growth in the HVAC industry.
- Troubleshooting basics and installation best practices: Apprentices will develop foundational knowledge of how installers identify and address common installation-related issues. Apprentices will learn the value of following best practices, paying attention to detail, and using problem-solving skills to support quality workmanship and system performance.
Training activities and responsibilities will depend on project needs, apprentice experience, and demonstrated readiness. Tasks involving specialized equipment or potentially hazardous work must be performed only with appropriate training, authorization, and supervision.
